Episode 14

This week, we welcome Dylan Carlson, of the band Earth, to the show.  Dylan was raised in a home that was really into music.  This may explain why Dylan’s first Grateful Dead show was in utero at the Eagle’s Auditorium 1/27/68. He still feels today, this may have contributed to his love for the Grateful Dead.  We discuss Dylan’s love for heavy metal and how these two worlds collided while living in the Seattle area in his high school years.  It was at this time Dylan got his first guitar, found weed and LSD and went to his actual first show which was the Chinese New Years shows in Oakland 2/8/86.

We discuss Dylan’s music career and the burgeoning of the Pacific Northwest music scene which would come to dominate in the years to follow.  Dylan spent a lot of time in Olympia, living with Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) and later living in Seattle with Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees).  So many great stories of their friendships and how these bands were influencing each other and the scene to come.  Dylan formed his current band, Earth, in 1989, and has been “slowly” tearing it up ever since.  He discusses how the album, “The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull” (Earth) was heavily influenced by the music of the Grateful Dead and is peppered with GD references throughout.
